The Foreign Language Teacher's Guide to Learning Disabilities
Strategies for Visual Learners
- Tape lectures
- Use visuals with lectures
- Always summarize key points in an introduction and a conclusion
- Remember to pre-teach
- If possible, provide a typed outline of the lesson
- Use associations (ex. Dr. and Mrs. van der Tramp) to help memory
- Use a handout or blackboard space to provide written directions
- Visual learners should be seated near the front to the center of the classroom activity
- Reduce the number of words in your directions (use key words)
- Don't be afraid to repeat instructions. This will also help the average learner in L2
- Use visuals and tapes together
- Do not give instructions while students are copying. They often will have trouble doing two things at once
- Try handing out a daily or weekly assignment sheet. Call attention to it frequently
- Remember good teaching strategy: pre-teach/teach/post-teach (recall)
