The Foreign Language Teacher's Guide to Learning Disabilities

Strategies for Visual Learners
  • Tape lectures
  • Use visuals with lectures
  • Always summarize key points in an introduction and a conclusion
  • Remember to pre-teach
  • If possible, provide a typed outline of the lesson
  • Use associations (ex. Dr. and Mrs. van der Tramp) to help memory
  • Use a handout or blackboard space to provide written directions
  • Visual learners should be seated near the front to the center of the classroom activity
  • Reduce the number of words in your directions (use key words)
  • Don't be afraid to repeat instructions. This will also help the average learner in L2
  • Use visuals and tapes together
  • Do not give instructions while students are copying. They often will have trouble doing two things at once
  • Try handing out a daily or weekly assignment sheet. Call attention to it frequently
  • Remember good teaching strategy: pre-teach/teach/post-teach (recall)
