Teaching Listening

Pre-listening

  • Bring in background knowledge
  • Have students brainstorm
  • Familiarize them with the new vocabulary

First Listening

  • Have students write down words that they hear
  • Place these words/cognates on the board
  • Have the students guess the meaning of what they have heard
  • Give them part of the exercise and have them guess the rest

Directed Listening

  • Give the students yes/no questions based on the content
  • Give the students visual clues based on the passage
  • Give the students information questions based on the passage
